Discover Ankabut

Fahem Al Nuaimi is Chief Executive Officer of Ankabut and is responsible for the overall direction and vision of the network. Under his dynamic leadership Ankabut has increased services and connectivity to nearly 50 campuses throughout the United Arab Emirates. Fahem graduated with a Bachelors of Engineering from United Arab Emirates University, and an MBA from Southern New Hampshire University.

Q: Please tell us about Ankabut and who it serves?

Fahem Al Nuaimi: Ankabut is the United Arab Emirates’ Advanced National Research and Education Network offering academic institutions connectivity to other education networks around the world. In addition to connecting universities, Ankabut connects schools and public institutions together across the UAE. Ankabut interconnects with a 10G backbone and 1G access links. Ankabut is jointly funded by the TRA through the ICT Fund and by Khalifa University who also manages the project.

Q: Can you tell us more about services you provide to your members?

Fahem Al Nuaimi: Ankabut enables a closed community network that allows the transfer of real-time services such as converged IM, voice and video communication, time-critical services such as cloud computing, and other services such as e-learning, and eFADA library consortium to name a few.

Q: Can you tell us more about new services you presented at the recent Users’ Meeting?

Fahem Al Nuaimi: I presented a number of new initiatives we are implementing. This included a new datacenter at our headquarters at Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi, a unified communications program and eduroam.

Q: Tell us about the Datacenter

Fahem Al Nuaimi: We have recently completed the building of a datacenter in which we contracted Alpha Data to design and build for the hosting of a variety of services for our members. This is important step to enhance the membership research and education mission to students, faculty and staff. The Datacenter will help mission critical issues such as disaster recovery, high performance computing etc.

Q: How about the Unified Communications?

Fahem Al Nuaimi: We are deploying a managed unified communications service, based on the latest Real-Presence platform from Polycom and Microsoft Lync 2013. The service is for use by our members to connect within the network and with other institutions within the UAE and abroad. We will enable members from Ankabut and its partners, to reach and connect with anyone easily with a single click, from any platform, powering rich media communication and sharing content and programs to increase productivity.

Q: What Eduroam is and why it’s important?

Fahem Al Nuaimi: The eduroam initiative started by the European NREN community and allows any enabled user to get network access at any institution connected to eduroam. Depending on local policies at the visited institutions, eduroam participants may also have additional resources at their disposal. We had discussed this idea with a number of our members and a pilot program led by EPFL Middle East, was conducted over the summer. During the Users’ Meeting we used eduroam at American University of Sharjah which made it possible for member participants to connect to their wireless by using their home school user name and password. We expect to have eduroam fully enabled in the upcoming months.
